The Army Substance Abuse Program (ASAP) provides drug and alcohol abuse prevention education programs for military personnel and families, Department of Defense civilians, reserve components, and retirees and their family members at Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA), Texas.
AgriLife Extension’s goal with the project is to assist the U.S. Army in developing and disseminating educational programs and resources to improve family life skills of DoD personnel and military families at JBSA. Extension focuses on providing prevention education through three main programming areas:
- Prevention Training: AgriLife Extension Agents coordinate and implement ASAP prevention training programs for service members and families and deliver continuing education training for unit leaders.
- Risk Reduction: AgriLife Extension Agents collaborate with commanders and JBSA leadership to reduce high risk behavior in service members.
- Suicide Prevention: AgriLife Extension Agents serve as the JBSA point of contact (POC) for suicide prevention and local subject matter expert (SME) on Army/policy and procedures related to suicide prevention.
*All educational services and programming is disseminated in a “non-clinical” format to military personnel and families.
The project is an Interservice Support Agreement (ISSA) between the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) – National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, and Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) under award no. 2018-48743-28935.
